The Rankin Can-Filter Fume Filtration System is the first-of-its-kind, whole-room carbon filter air filtration solution, designed specifically for fume management in histology labs. You deserve a work environment free from harmful airborne contaminants, and the Rankin system ensures just that by eliminating carcinogenic fumes often found in histology laboratories. With this stand-alone unit, no costly ventilation upgrades, facility modifications, or construction are required. Simply plug the system into a standard 110v outlet, select your preferred speed setting, and enjoy cleaner, safer air immediately.
One of the most convenient features of the Rankin Can-Filter system is its portability. Equipped with sturdy casters, the system can be easily moved around your lab to wherever it’s needed most. Its compact design, with a diameter of just 16.5″, allows it to fit seamlessly into even the most space-constrained laboratories, making it ideal for labs of any size.
This filtration system covers the entire lab, offering comprehensive air filtration for your workspace. However, it’s essential to note that the Rankin Can-Filter system is intended to complement, not replace, your existing local instrument filtration systems and fume hoods. Together, these systems provide the ultimate level of protection, creating a safer and more efficient lab environment for you and your team.
We recommend that your air be filtered every two minutes to ensure optimal air quality and safety in your histology lab. To achieve this level of filtration, it’s important to have the correct number of Can-Filters in place. Our general recommendation is one Can-Filter per 500 square feet of lab space, evenly spaced to ensure thorough coverage throughout the room.
The size of the Can-Filter you need depends on the height of your lab’s ceilings. For laboratories with 8-foot ceilings, we recommend using the CAN 100 model for efficient air filtration. If your lab has 9-foot ceilings, the CAN 125 is the ideal choice, providing greater capacity to accommodate the larger air volume. For spaces with ceilings 10 feet or higher, we recommend the CAN 150, which is designed to handle even more air and offer comprehensive filtration for larger spaces.
To ensure that your lab is equipped with the right filtration solution, use the chart below to determine the appropriate size and quantity of filters based on your lab’s square footage and ceiling height. By choosing the right Can-Filter system, you’ll maintain a cleaner, safer, and more productive lab environment, while adhering to proper ventilation standards.

Can my Filter be refilled?
No! While it’s technically possible to refill the filter, it’s not recommended to do so yourself. Can-Filters uses a specialized process to ensure proper packing of the carbon bed inside the filter. This process involves an industrial shaker with timed intervals and a dust extraction system to create a tightly packed carbon bed. The goal is to eliminate the risk of air finding preferred channels through the filter, as air naturally seeks the path of least resistance.
When air flows through a loosely packed or improperly filled filter, it can bypass sections of the carbon, rendering the filtration less effective. This could result in untreated, contaminated air flowing through your lab space. If you were to refill the filter on your own, even if you packed it as tightly as possible, the carbon would settle over time due to the fan’s vibrations. This settling would create air gaps, allowing unfiltered air to pass through these gaps, reducing the filter’s overall efficiency. In contrast, Can-Filters’ professional filling process ensures that the carbon remains evenly distributed and tightly packed, maintaining the filter’s optimal performance over its lifespan. Therefore, it’s best to rely on factory-sealed filters for the best air purification results.
